Hides to Seek
Sir and ma’am, please step away from the black leather sofa. You might think it’s a classic, but it’s a cliché, especially when paired with a glass table and polished-steel accents. So where should you rest your bottom instead? We at Gilt Home suggest the colorful seating from Elite Leather. Imagine swapping that bulky couch for a pair of fire-engine-red Flores armchairs with tufted seatbacks and turned legs: You’d add both a bright splash and a traditional touch to the room. Or go contemporary with the metal-framed, leather-topped Oliver stools designed by textile talent Lulu DK; they’d be perfect for a party and do double-duty as occasional tables. You could also try the fabric-covered Fortuna occasional chair, whose angled frame and clean lines would appeal to any Midcentury Modernist. So go ahead, settle into one of these beauties. You’ll be glad you did.
Find a seat at the Elite Leather sale on Thursday, January 28, at noon ET.

Jack Spade: Bag Inspection
- Cuan Hanly, the VP of Jack Spade, has already given us instructions on how to carry those mysterious man-bags (see the last Jack Spade post). But this time we were more interested in what we should keep in there. Cuan told us five items that every guy should keep at his disposal. (And here I thought I only needed my cell phone, keys and wallet.)
- 1. Compass
- 2. Pen knife
- 3. Zen and the Art of Motorcylce Maintenance... Read more

Y-3 Fall 2010 Men’s Presentation
- Last week, Y-3 (the collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and adidas – and a Gilt Man fave) presented a preview of their Fall 2010 collection for men in Paris. The designer sportswear highlighted a mixture of textures in really masculine jewel tones – yes, they exist – for a polished, urban aesthetic. Take a look at the video to catch a glimpse of what’s in store for next season.

Gilt in San Diego: Now That’s Amore
What could be more perfect on a cold, rainy night in San Diego than a movie and party in the city’s trendy Gaslamp District? On Thursday, Gilt Fuse again partnered with Marie Claire to do just that: host an advance screening and after-party for the Touchstone film When in Rome. For 90 minutes, the quirky love story starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel transported guests to the magnificent Italian capital, where along with Bell they wondered if Duhamel’s feelings were real or just a temporary spell cast by Roman landmark the Fontana de Amore (Fountain of Love). And when the film ended, the fun continued at the trendy Se Hotel.... Read more

Heutchy Shoes: The Well-heeled Man
In just over a year, Heutchy (pronounced Hi-chy) has carved out a
niche for the guy who wants well-made shoes in classic styles not
unlike the ones your grandfather wore. But it’s the interesting mix of
materials and artist collaborations that make this line of footwear so
thoroughly modern. Gilt Man had a chat with designer Wells Stellberger
to find out where all this is coming from – and where it’s all going.
How would you describe your own personal style, does it mirror the
look of Heutchy?
I gravitate toward simple things that posses a distinct quality,
whether it’s a combination of materials, a special leather or a
construction detail. Heutchy shoes began with a similar mindset: the
pursuit of something my friends and I would want to wear, something
that could stand the test of time.
So who is the Heutchy guy?
He’s someone who looks for quality and a design that’s not pretentious
but wearable from day to day. I hope we’re able to reach the guy who
knows exactly what he likes and is sophisticated enough to understand
and appreciate what we offer.

Unis: Design of a Decade
- New York designer Eunice Lee launched her menswear line in 2000 and has since perfected the brand’s signature look: sophisticated prep. Gilt Man caught up with her to reflect on ten years spent dressing downtown dwellers in rumpled khakis and button-downs.
- Happy 10-year anniversary! How would you sum up the first decade of Unis?
- Blood, sweat and tears. These were the toughest ten years of my life. But through it all, I realized how much I love what I do. The collection has evolved so much over the years. I love it more every season.
- What prompted you to start your own line back in 2000?
- When I worked in large companies I saw so many designers disillusioned with their jobs. I wanted a little more control over my destiny. A lot of us dream about having our own collections and I was lucky enough to get a chance to do it.

Reebok: Pump It Up
- Ah, 1989. It was the year the Berlin Wall fell — and the year Reebok upped the game with the Pump, the first-ever sneaker with self-adjusting air cushioning. Those high-tops sparked a mania that L.A. Gear could only envy. So do you still have your pair?
- If not, no worries, as we at Gilt Man just got our hands on a pile of the retro-styled sneaks. Offered in a riot of colors, these special-edition kicks will pop on the street and get you looking for that Cowboys Starter jacket hidden in the back of the closet. ’Cause we know you still have that.
- Get pumped for our Reebok sale on Thursday, January 21, at noon ET.

Block Headwear: A Matter of Size
When JFK stopped wearing hats, America followed suit. Hatters have been down on their luck ever since. But like writing letters or drinking highballs, there can be some major cache in wearing a hat – if you do it well. To get you started, Gilt Man is offering a selection of hats from Block Headwear this week. Block has been crafting fresh-looking hats that’ll have you feeling like Fitzgerald without looking like your grandpa. Just make sure you order the right size (don’t worry, we’ll help).- Gilt Man Guide: How to find your hat size.
- Take a measuring tape* (the soft, flexible kind) and measure the circumference of your head just above the ears. The tape should pass over the bump on the back of your skull and go across the middle of forehead. Use the chart above to translate the measurement to your hat size.
